The ratings setups absolutely work and find more opportunities than simple gaps.

The Fast Fade, finds races where there are only 3 horses in the top band of ratings - even when there may not be a big gap.

Tent Pole, between the top-rated and 2nd rated.

Top Knot, specifically finds setups where the 2 top-rated runners are rated well clear of the field.

Just looking at the 3 top ratings in the race allows us to draw useful conclusions that may help us with winners, multibets, quinellas, exactas and trifectas.

Of course it's not foolproof - but anything that improves our chances will eventually pay off with improved strike rates in the medium term and long term.

How to use them.

Tent Pole: 1TR minus 2TR Look for 10 points or more.

Fast Fade: 1TR minus 3TR  (Races where "it's lonely at the top" and most of the field fades quickly away from the 1TR top rater) Look for 20 points or more.

Top Knot: 2TR minus 3TR  (The best 2 rated horses stand out from the rest of the field) Look for 15 points or more.

67 plus: All the setups require an "Y" in this column. 68 is the ARR rating where results start to flow - even without setups!

So it's easy peasy... you scan your eye down the Setups page until you spot an "Y" in the far right column - this is a huge time saver.

Because testing has shown most ARR ratings are weak - even the top rater - when the rating is under about 68, so now we can very quickly spot the handful runners that are worth a closer look for a ratings setup.

And then we look in the first column (Tent Pole) for at least a 10, or at least a 20 in the third column (Fast Fade). You can analyse a whole day's racing in a minute or less!

(Potentially if we insist on all 3 columns being sweet - 67plus, TP10 or more, FF20 or more - the setups might be even stronger. That hasn't been tested, as profit was found with just the 2 column test as described above. Users might like to try going for all 3, however, and may get better strike rates. On the other hand, there will be few selections, and some days none.)

The Top Knot column is not required for the win/place method above. For exotic bets and multibets we have an alternative method here to look for 67plus / Top Knot of 15 or more. The aim of this method is to find races with 2 runners that stand out in the ratings (like a top knot hairstyle!).

What's different here is that we use both the 2 best ratings. The 2nd best rater is in the row just under the row that has the 67plus "Ok". These could be dutched, multibet, quinella or exacta bet. Less testing has been done on this method, but the theory is sound.

In the above this is what the display in the software looks like as you can see in the 67 Plus column they are all Y so all of these horses are possible selections.

We need to check the Tent Pole column is 10 or more and the Fast Fade is 20 or more.

The highlighted in light green are the selections that are to be bet.

We have some Tighter rules doing well.

The formula used in these ratings is the exact same we use in the Rate The Races UK, Ireland and world version.

And that throw up good priced winners, and the same is so of the Australian RTR.

You can save the ratings in a csv format to use on excel, open office or the such like.
